Government Increases Funding for Mental Health Services Across the UK
The government of the UK has announced that anyone experiencing a mental health emergency will benefit from more specific emergency care and support in the community through specially trained mental health ambulances, more crisis services and improved health-based places of safety.
Up until April 2025, a £150 million investment will help alleviate the strain on the NHS by enabling individuals going through mental health crises to receive care and support in more suitable settings outside of A&E.
Mental health spending is not ring-fenced; ICBs are expected to meet the’mental health investment standard’ (MHIS). This requires increases in local mental health spending to be at least as large, proportionally speaking, as overall increases in local funding. So, if an ICB receives a 5% increase in its funding allocation, it must increase its mental health spending by at least 5% to meet the MHIS.
It will also fund 150 new projects centered on supporting the provision of mental health crisis response, urgent mental health crisis response and urgent mental health care. More than 30 programs offering crisis cafes, crisis houses, and other comparable safe spaces are among the new initiatives, along with more than 20 newly constructed or renovated police-detained health facilities. Improvements to NHS111 and crisis phone lines will also be implemented.
